Part 1   Part 2

Seattle
Recovery

After leaving Whistler, we headed down to Nate’s mom’s house in Seattle for a dry place to sleep and a doctor covered by Kaiser. The only hiccup occurred when the U.S. customs agent asked me if we had any food in the van, to which I replied “No.” He didn’t really buy that, but I qualified it with “No food that we bought in Canada.” So he let us dirtbags back in to the U.S. We arrived on Mercer Island to a wonderful home cooked meal that began many evening of wonderful home cooked meals. Lura and Bill spoiled us: Flank Steak, Halibut Cheeks, whole Chickens; when we’re on the road eating cold Mac and Cheese I’ll just think of those meals and cry. Their house also came equipped with showers, so I was clean after playing on the mud for three days. It was a toss up between our plywood bunks in the van and a real bed, but after Nate pleaded and whined I relented and said the bunks could wait for a few days.

The trip to the ER came early the next morning. After some X-rays and a quick consultation, the verdict was a broken pinky. Nate got a big splint and was told to see a doctor in a week. So mountain biking is out for awhile, but there’s still plenty of fun things to do that are better than being at work. Upon return, we were greeted with smoked salmon, eggs and toast for breakfast. Better than oatmeal, but just barely.

Our time in Seattle wasn’t all laziness and eating, we did get out and suffer a bit. Monday we hiked the Kendall Katwalk, which was about 11 miles roundtrip, and about 6 hours long. The Katwalk is a section of trail carved into a Cliffside and the turn-around point for our hike. It rained off and on, but all in all was a great time. Nora, the six month old yellow lab wonder dog, did the whole hike fueled by doggy treats and raw energy. She did have the unnerving habit of walking to the edge of every huge dropoff, so she ended up on the leash for some of the hike. Most of the time though, it was her running by in a streak of yellow, then stopping to sniff something in the middle of to trail, then repeating. On the way back from the hike, Nate says I passed out on the backpacks in the back, but I don’t really remember that.

Next up, the San Juan Islands and Mike and Claudia’s house.
