City of Rocks
This City Rocks!
Not willing to sleep in a rest area again on the way to Portland, Nate noticed that City of Rocks was on the way, a place we both had heard of but never been. After wandering down two wrong dirt roads in far south-eastern Idaho, we finally found the right one and pulled in late in the evening. It only got down to 20 degrees in the van that night; due to our now superior sleeping skills, that wasn’t even a problem. Hey, don’t even bother to wake me up unless it’s single digits!
City of Rocks is located right on the Oregon Trail, so people have known about it for quite a long time. Only relatively recently have the rock climbing bums started to move in. We were spared the smell of patchouli and broken down VW vans by the 6” of snow on the ground, which makes climbing a bit more difficult. Never ones to let a little snow deter our fun, we grabbed boots and cameras and headed out for a little exploration. We spent three hours weaving between rock formations and trying to get on top of at least one. We never did get to the top of any, but we did find all kinds of interesting formations and fun (in the summer) rock climbing routes. Even better, we didn’t see a single other footprint the whole time.
Our adventure quota satisfied for the day, it was time to stop stalling and finish the drive to Portland. Off to more adventures.
