Anthony Lakes
Little mountain, big fun!
Heading out from Portland, our destination was Colorado. If you’re in a hurry, you could drive it in a really long day, but what do we have to hurry for? Nate and I had independently heard about a little ski area in eastern Oregon called Anthony Lakes, which was supposed to be small but a lot of fun. Why not try it? We arrived late morning on a Sunday to find no more than 50 cars in the lot and fresh snow left over from two days prior. Sounds good to me! After some scrambling to find our dispersed ski gear, we were on the chairlift to the top. Oh yeah, there is only one chairlift, and it’s an old triple with a 900’ vertical foot rise. On paper, that doesn’t sound too promising, but by traversing from the top of the chair we found barely tracked powder all day long. It was the best skiing we’d had this season, and I kept trying to figure out a reason to get back there. Sadly enough, it’s not really on the way to anywhere (except Portland to Salt Lake City, which isn’t a drive I do much), so that one day will most likely be my only day at Anthony Lakes. But if you happen to be driving by that way and you’ve got time to ski, check it out.
